Enhancing Healthcare Access and Outcomes: A Comprehensive Analysis of Interstate Medical Licensure Compact and Telehealth Practice

Overview Resources

Project Overview

Workplan Goal: The Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) will collaborate with the Center for Telehealth at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) to explore the IMLC influence on telehealth services using Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) research claims data, which contains a wide range of information related to healthcare services provided to beneficiaries. The goal is to comprehensively investigate the influence of IMLC on telehealth services access and quality of care. We will retrospectively assess the influence of the IMLC on telehealth utilization trends among Mississippi and nationwide Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries from 2019 to 2022. Further, geographical distribution and the range of healthcare services provided by physicians licensed through the IMLC and other pathways will be examined with consideration of provider demographics. Additionally, we will evaluate the impact of these services on patient outcomes and healthcare delivery, contributing to the health policy discussion. An extension of this study may be conducted in the future to utilize more recent data, when data is available, to inform the post-COVID-19 era.
